10 Bible Verses About Comparing Yourself to Others
Can we just start by pointing out the obvious?
We don’t know everything there is to know about other people.
We usually only see the highlight reels of other people’s lives – the pretty, fun, click-worthy stuff.
Which makes comparing ourselves to others, kinda silly.
Unlike us, God sees all of us – our hurts, struggles, fear, sin, everything…
And He’s concerned with helping us to be more like Jesus, not helping us to be like the woman next door…
So let’s take our cue from Him and focus on letting Him transform us into who He’s called us to be.
2 Corinthians 10:12 – “Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!”
Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV) – “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Galatians 6:4-5 – “Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.”
James 3:14-16 – “For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.”
Proverbs 14:30 – “A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.”
1 Corinthians 3:3 – “for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world?”
1 Timothy 6:6 (ESV) – “But godliness with contentment is great gain,”
1 John 2:25 (ESV) – “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
1 Corinthians 4:5 – “So don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due.”
1 Corinthians 4:7 – “For what gives you the right to make such a judgment? What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift?

Comparison is Hurting You
Constantly comparing yourself to others is both draining and destructive.
And consistently doing it will cause some pretty nasty side effects:
- Mental and emotional exhaustion
- Jealousy
- Tearing others down, instead of building them up
- An ungrateful heart
- An attitude of entitlement
- A poor self image
- A self-centered attitude (pridefulness)
- A lack of contentment
But when you take a closer look, you see an even more serious issues:
-> You begin to put more emphasis on what others think about you (or what you want them to think about you), than on what God thinks about you.
In other words, your life and focus becomes centered on you, instead of on God.
It’s easy to get roped into living for the approval of others, instead of living a life that’s pleasing to God.
But the Word of God can help.

Through the help of the Holy Spirit, God corrects us, heals us, and helps us to adopt Godly attitudes and behaviors.
