Golden Rules for Goal Setting

Before we dive into specific examples of powerful life goals for a woman, let’s talk about some goal setting rules to keep you on target.

SMART Goals

Of course there’s the importance of setting SMART goals.

I won’t go in depth on SMART goals here, but basically it’s a fancy way of saying that your goals should be clear, trackable, doable, important, and have a deadline.

Let’s break it down just a teeny bit more, shall we?

Goal Setting Tips

I don’t have a fancy acronym for the rest of these goal setting tips, but from personal experience I can tell you that they’ll help you do more with less overwhelm.

#1. Break it Down and Space it Out

Break yearly goals down into action items that you will tackle each quarter.

From there you can break it down further into monthly, weekly, and daily action items.

My favorite tool for helping me plan and schedule my goals is this Goals Planner. It guides you through a series of questions that make setting SMART goals feel effortless.

Cultivate What Matters Goal Planner

#2. Give yourself enough time

You don’t have to tackle every goal at the same time.

Let me say that again…

You don’t have to work on all 8 life areas right now.

Pick and choose wisely.

#3. Schedule Regular Check-Ins

Quarterly goal reviews are my favorite way to take a high level peek at my progress.

My Goal Planner walks me through a quarterly refresh that helps me celebrate my progress, and identify what I should focus on over the next few months.

During the week, I keep my action items front and center by using this weekly planner.

*I personally need my to-do list to be visible at all times. If it’s tucked away in a notebook or even on my phone, I have a hard time staying on track with my goals.

I love this weekly planner because I can keep it right on my desk. Every time I see it, it reminds me of my priorities for the week.

#4 Get Accountability & Community

If possible find someone, or a community of people who can help you stay motivated and encouraged on your journey.

And I must say, there’s something really special and powerful about surrounding yourself with other purpose driven women.

I’m personally still working on building community (it’s not as easy as I’d like it to be).

But, I can already see the benefits from the community I do have and it’s a game changer.

8 Life Areas Circle to Consider When Setting Goals

8 Areas of life for Goal Setting

Moving through life without goals is like going for an insanely long drive without a destination in mind. You’ll spend loads of your valuable time and money, but probably won’t end up where you want or need to be.

That’s a recipe for a life full of regret… and nobody wants that.

Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about that.

This list of life goals for women will help you set goals in every area of your life.

You can set goals across these 8 areas of your life:

  1. Spiritual Goals
  2. Financial Goals
  3. Career Goals
  4. Personal Development
  5. Health Goals
  6. Family Goals
  7. Marriage Goals
  8. Social Goals

Customize these goals based on your life and priorities. If you see a goal that resonates with you, simply ask yourself “How could I turn this into a SMART goal for myself?

Spiritual Goals

Your relationship with God, with Jesus, and with the Holy Spirit is the most important relationship you’ll ever have.

Growing in this relationship should be top priority.

Women holding hands and the bible

Here are some goals to inspire your Spiritual Growth.

1. Cultivate Gratitude:

Not only is a grateful heart pleasing to God, but it’s also beneficial to you. Regularly reflecting on the blessings in your life, no matter how small, shifts your focus towards the good things in your life. It will leave you feeling more content and happier.

💡IDEA: Every morning and night, write a list of 5 things you’re grateful for.

2. Meditate on the Word of God:

Joshua 1:8 Commands us to meditate on the Word of God day and night. That instruction is present all over the Bible. Meditation simply means spending time thinking about and praying about the Word.

Practicing meditation will take you from knowing about what the Bible says, to being able to live it in an authentic way. Over time it changes the way you think and act so that you reflect more of Jesus.

💡IDEA: Choose 1 Bible Verse a week to memorize and meditate on.

3. Quiet Time Routine:

Let’s face it – life gets hectic and busy. It can be hard to find time to spend with God. But intentionally carving out time to worship, read your Bible, and pray will make an enormous difference in your walk with God.

💡IDEA: Get up at 6:30am every morning to spend time with God.

4. Practice His Presence:

Sometimes the busyness of life makes it too easy to forget about God. Practicing His presence simply means cultivating an awareness that He’s with us all the time.

It doesn’t have to be long and in depth. It could be as simple as remembering to say “thank you Lord” whenever something good happens. Or saying, “help me Lord” whenever you’re struggling.

The point is to invite Him into all the moments of your day, not just the big things.

💡IDEA: Set daily reminders on your phone for the morning, afternoon, and night, to pray and talk to God.

5. Grow your Prayer Life:

Your prayer life is the foundation of your relationship with God. It’s one of the ways you go from just knowing about God to having a personal relationship with Him.

Look at your prayer life and set a goal to grow in it.

💡IDEA: Get a prayer journal and journal your prayers nightly.

6. Get Involved in Church:

The Church isn’t a building – it’s us – you and I. And the Bible stresses the importance of being in a community with fellow believers.

Getting involved in your church, whether by taking a class, joining a small group, or volunteering can help you develop spiritually.

💡IDEA: Join a small group at your local church

7. Serve & Volunteer:

We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus – to live like He did and that means serving.

Volunteering in your church and/or with another organization is an excellent way to live out your faith.

💡IDEA: Join the Usher ministry at church

8. Ask for Direction:

Our relationship with God can often be one-sided, a monologue of sorts. But 2 way communication is at the core of any strong relationship.

God spoke to people both in the old and New Testament. And He’s interested in the details of your life. Develop a practice of asking God’s direction in your daily life.

💡IDEA: Make Him a part of your goal planning session. Ask for His direction on what to focus on. And as you work towards your goals, keep asking Him to lead you.

9. Pray for Others Regularly:

If your prayer life is mostly centered on you and your family, you’re not alone. But this is a chance for us to look around for others who need prayer and to pray for them.

💡IDEA: Make a list of 5 people who don’t know God, and pray for their salvation. Spend 5 minutes every week praying for them.

10. Practice Surrendering Your Will:

Ugh. This is a tough one for most of us, but it’s the key to growing in our relationship with God.

💡IDEA: Look at the areas of your life that you know you haven’t surrendered or you’re not being obedient in and commit to praying about it every day until you experience God changing your heart in those areas.

Financial Goals

It’s not all about the Benjamins, girlfriend. But we’d be remiss if we didn’t plan for a healthy financial future.

Woman stressing about finances Graphic

Embarking on a journey to improve your finances, build wealth, and create stability is as important as it is empowering.

But frankly, it can also feel overwhelming and intimidating.

So here are 10 goals that will guide you toward a future filled with financial abundance and security:

1. Budget with Purpose:

Create a detailed budget that aligns with your goals and values. A budget empowers you to track spending, save strategically, and make intentional financial choices.

💡IDEA: Use a simple Budget Spreadsheet that will help you keep track of where your money is going and how to create more financial wiggle room.

2. Set Savings Milestones:

Establish savings goals for short-term needs, emergencies, and long-term goals.

Saving consistently lays the foundation for financial stability and future investments.

💡IDEA: Open a savings account that’s not connected to your checking account. Send a portion of your paycheck to that savings account.

Hint: I use a different bank, so that I can’t see how much money I have in my savings account when I sign in to do my regular banking.

3. Get on top of Debt:

Create a plan to pay off debt systematically. Reducing debt not only improves your credit but also frees up funds for wealth-building endeavors.

4. Choose an Investment Strategy:

Educate yourself about various investment options and start investing. Investments have the potential to grow your wealth over time and provide financial security.

💡IDEA: Look at the company that manages your 401k and reach out to a financial advisor there about amping up your investment strategy.

Embrace a frugal mindset and spend less than you earn. This frees up money for savings, investments, and unexpected expenses.

💡IDEA: Look at your budget and highlight the things you can cut out or temporarily reduce.

7. Get a Financial Education:

Invest time in learning about personal finance and money management so you can make informed financial decisions.

💡IDEA: Explore YouTube to find awesome content from personal finance experts who can encourage and educate you.

8. Build an Emergency Fund:

Build a safety net to help you cover unexpected expenses and weather financial storms.

💡IDEA: Start with a goal of saving $1000 for your Emergency Fund.

9. Plan for Retirement:

Start planning for retirement early by contributing to your retirement account.

💡IDEA: Look at your current contributions and make a game plan to increase it over the next year.

10. Regular Progress Overview:

Set aside time to review your financial goals and progress periodically.

Regular check-ins keep you accountable and motivated on your wealth-building journey.

💡IDEA: Set quarterly financial goals for yourself, and take a look at your big picture progress every 3 months.

Of course, checking in monthly or even bi-weekly, will help you make sure you’re on target to hit your goal.

Remember, you have the power to shape your financial future.

Each step you take brings you closer to financial empowerment and freedom.

Don’t forget to celebrate both small and large wins along the way, and to be patient in the process.
